This commercial highlights some representations of women in popular culture. In popular media, attrative women are represented as very skinny. In this commercial, Yoplait bases their commercial mainly around the fact that typical indulgence of sugary desserts leads to weight gain.
A woman is on the phone, presumably talking to a woman friend, about all of the delicious foods that she has been eating for the past couple days. Her husband overhears her phone conversation, and thinks that there are tons of delicious desserts and frantically searches the fridge for said desserts. At the end of the commercial, when the women tells her friend that she has lost weight, her husband looks up in confusion. It is clear that he is wondering how his wife could possibly eat all of those desserts and lose weight, and then the woman asks what he is doing looking in the fridge.
This commercial plays on the popular representation of women that women need to be skinny to be attractive. Another thing to note is that the woman is in workout clothes, so the viewer will subconsciously associate eating a low-fat diet with exercise to become attractive.

ReplyDeleteI think you should get more detailed and give more examples of how she is portrayed. Whether it is specific things she does, or how the male roles react to her, put some extra details in there. You should also add some pictures or to drive home your point. But great start, you picked a good topic!
ReplyDeleteWhat other representations of women in popular culture do you think could be highlighted from this commercial, or other commercials on tv in general?
ReplyDeleteI think you should stick with one commercial and try not to add another one in, unless you compare it to other yoplait commercials and how they have become less sexist or something. You could also add in some detail about the male gaze and how it is not in this commercial. Or you could add that they are trying to tell women that they have to be skinny and lose weight, instead of saying that they are good the way they are.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point on beauty's definition being skinny. I don't think I have seen a single model for famous apparell design who are fat. With your video, I was able to see what you were tyring to show on your blog post. Nice job.
